What is your role during a disaster or in preparedness/planning?
I helped organize and mentor a radio-oriented group of CERT (Community Emergency Response Team)-trained volunteers who specifically train to support the CERT effort in the unincorporated area of San Mateo County (SMC) north of Half Moon Bay and south of Pacifica. I am a member of the coordinating group working to obtain official SMC Office of Emergency Services/Coastside Fire District sponsorship of the group. I also represent the unincorporated area of SMC on the Country CERT Communications Committee that considers both ham and Personal Radio Service usage in support of CERT/emergency preparedness efforts. I am currently two years retired from 29+ years with NASA Ames Research Center as a research pilot/aero engineer, with 11 yrs of concurrent service as a rescue helicopter pilot and helicopter element commander with the 129th Aerospace Rescue Group at Moffett Field. I previously served 10 years in the U.S. Marine Corps as a helicopter pilot following graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1968. I am particularly interested in seeing the small businesses and non-profits in the unincorporated area become part of an organized whole in support of local emergency preparedness.
